Overview

Inlays and onlays are conservative restorations for back teeth (molars and premolars) where the damage is too extensive for a filling but does not require a full crown. An inlay sits inside the cusps of the tooth, restoring the chewing surface within the existing borders. An onlay covers one or more cusps in addition to the central surface, taking on a larger share of the load. Both are made from composite resin, porcelain, or metal, depending on what fits the case best.

When They Are the Right Tool

An inlay or onlay is a strong choice when the tooth has decay or fracture beyond what a filling can cleanly handle, but enough sound tooth remains that a full-coverage crown would be over-treatment. They preserve more natural tooth structure than a crown, and they tend to last longer than a large composite filling because the restoration is fabricated in the lab and bonded as a single piece.

  • Rebuilds a decayed or fractured chewing surface with a precise, one-piece restoration

  • Adds strength back to the tooth instead of relying on a large filling to wedge in place

  • Preserves more enamel than a crown

  • Long service life with normal care

  • Color-matched to the surrounding tooth when porcelain or composite is chosen

What to Expect

Placement usually takes two visits. Dr. Jill Rowland prepares the tooth, captures a digital impression, and seats a temporary while the lab fabricates the final restoration. At the second visit she checks fit and bite, then bonds the inlay or onlay permanently. Day-to-day care is the same as for a natural tooth: brush, floss, and keep up with cleanings at Diamond Dentistry.
