Why Annual Exams Matter

Periodontal disease — the leading cause of tooth loss — often does not produce obvious symptoms until it is well advanced. The same is true for early-stage decay between teeth and many oral cancers. Regular exams catch these in a window where treatment is straightforward.

What Happens at Your Visit

Dr. Rowland reviews your medical and dental history, then performs the clinical exam: each tooth is checked for decay or fracture, gums and periodontal pockets are measured, and your bite and jaw joints are evaluated. Digital X-rays are taken at intervals appropriate to your risk profile (not every visit). The visit ends with a discussion of what was found and any recommended next steps. Patients of every age should plan on at least one exam per year — more often if Dr. Rowland recommends it based on what she sees.
